Dr. Max Gomez - Marfan’s Syndrome Is Deadly, Elusive: “Theng of the movie ‘Rent’ this past week was a bittersweet event — the author of the original play, Jonathan Larson, never lived to see the remarkable success.
Larson died the night of the play’s final dress rehearsal of a torn aneurysm in his chest, the underlying cause of which was Marfan’s Syndrome, a disease that affects one in 5,000 Americans.”

So Anthony Rapp (Mark in the show) tells how one or two stunned souls started to sing, ‘and we knew we had to find ourselves for Jonathan. As the songs came out of us, we felt galvanized but we were in shock. …’”

Marfan Syndrome Community Benefits from the Legacy of Jonathan Larson, RENT Playwright: His hit Broadway show, RENT, featured characters struggling with, and dying from, AIDS but it was Marfan syndrome, a disorder of the body’s connective tissue, that claimed the life of playwright Jonathan Larson before RENTd on the Great White Way. … In January 1996, in the few days before the final rehearsal of RENT, Larson had visited the emergency departments at two different hospitals complaining of excruciating chest pain. One sent him home with a diagnosis of food poisoning; the second diagnosed a mild case of flu. In the middle of the night, without the emergency surgery that could have saved his life, Jonathan died alone in his New York City apartment. It was ten days before his 36th birthday.
